Childhood Health Associates of Salem is excited to announce that the technology is finally in place for us to be able to securely prescribe controlled substances (such as ADHD medications) directly to the pharmacy. The concept has been legal in Oregon for some time now but physicians and pharmacies needed to come up with ways to clearly verify the process.
Our EHR now has this capability and our providers are getting up to speed on using it. We are still in a transition period right now, getting our doctors and mid-levels credentialed for this and training them in how to use it, but we do have some providers who are sending these medications electronically. This is actually far more secure than dealing with a paper prescription and we are quite happy about it.
You may continue to call us for prescription refill requests for your child's ADHD stimulant every month but you can help us out by also telling us which pharmacy you would like to use. If your child's PCP is able to send the prescription electronically then he or she will do so, and you'll be notified of that. Once you know that your child's PCP is signed up for this program you'll also be able to request the refill through the pharmacy*, as the pharmacy can send us a secure message requesting an electronic prescription.
No more coming to the office and waiting in line to get the paper prescription, then driving across town to your pharmacy and waiting yet again! We hope that this service will save our families time and hassle. As always, we continue to strive to be on the cutting edge of taking care of your children.
*Currently not all pharmacies are ready to participate; if your pharmacy has not yet enabled this service then we will continue to give you a paper prescription until your pharmacy has made the change.
