When evaluating health information on the internet keep the following in mind:
- Consider the source (Who is publishing the site?)
- Beware of bias (Who is funding the site?)
- Focus on quality
- Be a cyberskeptic (Is the information I'm finding consistent with information available on other sites?)
- Look for the evidence (What is basis for claims made on the site?)
- Check for currency (How old is the information?)
- Protect your privacy (Don't give out private health information to web site.)
- Consult with your health professional (Is information consistent with advice from your doctor? Bring information to your next visit to discuss with your doctor).
