When evaluating health information on the internet keep the following in mind:

  • Consider the source (Who is publishing the site?)
  • Beware of bias (Who is funding the site?)
  • Focus on quality
  • Be a cyberskeptic (Is the information I'm finding consistent with information available on other sites?)
  • Look for the evidence (What is basis for claims made on the site?)
  • Check for currency (How old is the information?)
  • Protect your privacy (Don't give out private health information to web site.)
  • Consult with your health professional (Is information consistent with advice from your doctor? Bring information to your next visit to discuss with your doctor).
