Updated Car Safety Seat Laws for Oregon

As of July 1st, 2007 the laws governing car safety seats in Oregon was updated. The new law is compatible with previous national recommendations from AAP and NHTSA. Motor vehicle collisions is the number one lethal accidental cause of death for children.h3. Infants (less than one year old)
Infant seats need to be rear facing until the child is 20 pounds AND one year old. This better protects children during high speed head on collisions.

While there has been no change in the law, recently the American Academy of Pediatrics updated recommendations that all children whould remain rear facing until age two. This is due to evidence that children have 75% better chance of surviving crash in that position. To learn more visit AAP Car Seat Information page.

Infants need rear facing up to 20 pounds and one year. Front facing car seat until 40 pounds, then booster seat until 4 feet 9 inches. Here is a poster with more information: http://tinyurl.com/bspdxb
Recent regulations have simplified rules by removing age 4 and age 6 requirements. Only height requirement relates to use of booster seats.
