Respiratory syncytial virus is here

It appears that winter illnesses are here. Relatively mild influenza activity at this time, but in the last week we are seeing increasing patients with RSV infection. RSV is a common respiratory virus that infects all age groups. In older children, teenagers, and adults symptoms are similar to bad cold. In those patients with history of asthma or other chronic respiratory diseases as well as the young it can cause more severe illness. Treatment is primarily supportive. Generally a child requires hospitalization if they have difficulties drinking fluids, putting them at risk for dehydration or they need oxygen support. This is the time of year to avoid crowds, remember frequent hand washing, and avoid exposure to cigarette smoke. More information.
