Learning Disabilities
Learning disabilities are described as when a difference exists between someone’s potential (loosely defined as IQ) and ability. This suggests that something is getting in the way of the child reaching their academic potential. Many, many things can get in the way and we are only beginning to classify types of learning problems. If all subjects are affected than a search for a more general problem can be looked for such as difficulties with hearing or vision and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). If only one subject is affected (i.e. reading or math) than the child more likely has a specific learning difficulty just
in that area. Learning difficulties are best assessed by academic testing through school system to better classify learning difficulty and medical evaluation if there are concerns about
ADHD or other neurodevelopmental disorder.
