4th of July Safety

Fourth of July is a special holiday to celebrate the birth of our country. Unfortunately injuries from fireworks continue to rise. In the last year there were over 10,000 injuries and more than half of the victims were children. Thirty-six people have died from 2000 to 2005. Sparklers are often thought as completely safe but also cause injuries. Be sure to only light fireworks that are legal in your area. All fireworks must be supervised by adults. It is best if children observe and not participate in the hands-on lighting of the fireworks. For the most spectacular show and to avoid the possiblity of injuries seek out city sponsored shows in your area. For a listing of locations in Oregon check out oregonlive.com.
Have a happy and safe Fourth of July.
Screening for postpartum depression
June 13, 2007 by Kenneth Carlson, MD
Postpartum depression, also known as the “baby blues” is extremely common following the birth of a new baby. A combination of factors contribute including hormonal changes, fatigue, and the stress of having a new baby in the home. Some estimates put the incidence of depression at 10% with the incidence of “baby blues” much higher. Fortunately milder symptoms often resolve quickly with rest, time and family support. More severe symptoms can be quite serious and affect early attachment with the newborn and persist for a significant amount of time. Postpartum depression is a real and a very serious disease and if present the mother should discuss with her obstetrician to discuss treatment options. Read more
