The first stage of construction is all underground; the top layers of dirt have to be scraped off and replaced with compacted rock and gravel to allow for stability and drainage. The trenches are for the different power, water, sewer and gas lines. The building pad is small gravel and gets compacted over and over and over, and before concrete is poured it will need the underground lines all fed to the appropriate places for the building.
