Car Seat Assistance Program

May 14, 2008 by Kenneth Carlson, MD

If you need help to purchase a car seat there are several agencies supporting a program to get you a car set at low cost. The program is administered by Safe Kids here in Salem. Our office is not directly involved in the program but do support its efforts to make car seats available to families. This is also an excellent program to check if you are installing it correctly. It is very common for the seat to not be installed in the absolute correct way. For general information check out our page on safety seats.

Important facts about the program:

  • To be eligible the parent/guardian must provide income eligibility, such as a WIC, OHP, or Oregon Trail card, and currently need a new car seat (or don’t have one).
  • Call 503-561-5138 to make an appointment to purchase a low cost seat.
  • The $30 co-pay per seat must be paid at the time the seat is received. There is a $10 co-pay for a “no back” booster seat.
  • Seats are available once a month, by appointment during the Car Seat Safety Clinic. This event is held the third Saturday of each month from 11-3 p.m. in various locations in Salem, Keizer and Dallas.
  • Seats are only provided to parents or legal guardians, who must be present to obtain the seat. Only one seat per child.
  • The child receiving the seat must be present unless the baby is not yet born.
  • The vehicle in which the child travels must be brought to the car seat check.
  • Parents or guardians will be taught to correctly install and use the car seat.
